medical information
Medicine, the practice of it, is an art and craft, not a science. Like all arts and crafts, medical practice is based on the physical sciences.

Constructing or repairing a building or a bridge without taking into consideration the known mathematical, physical and chemical laws and principles would be a dismal engineering failure and a claptrap of a construction job.

Practicing medicine also requires a consideration of the physical sciences and also of the so called psychological and social sciences.

The doctor has to understand the patient's personality and his social and financial status in order to understand his disease for which he must prescribe suitable treatment. And finally, but not of lesser importance, the doctor must know the psychology of "selling" because he has to sell the patient the treatment and an idea.

Most of the time the doctor has to sell the patient new ideas which are entirely foreign to the patient's mind. A practicing doctor does not have to be a scientist; but in practicing his art he must conform to scientific law and principle, just as the mechanic works with scientifically perfected tools and blueprints.

There is no more reason for the doctor to make a mystery of his art than there is for the artisan to make a mystery of his. Doctors should not wrap themselves up in scientific shrouds to scare the public with their black magic, Latinized incantations and marvelous miracles.

The individual patient and the public at large should be taken into full and complete confidence in all medical matters because their most prized possession, individual and public health, is involved.

The fact is that the public is penetrating and crowding in from behind the iron curtain, as witness the Cancer Campaign, the Infantile Paralysis, Heart, Rheumatism, Diabetic, Multiple Sclerosis and many other health campaigns, foundations and associations.

But many medical men and medical organization leaders still insist on burying their ostrich heads in the desert sands of Egyptian magic. The public, which is already showing its great interest in medicine and in medical affairs, should take the entire business of medicine over, make the doctor give up the salesmanship part of medical practice so that he can devote himself entirely to guarding the individual and public health.

Books telling the public all about health, disease and medicine will bring enlightenment and cooperation of the individual and the public.

This, however, does not mean that the family doctor, the general practitioner, can ever be replaced in the proper and sympathetic relationship which must exist between patient and doctor, in order for the one to have faith and the other to understand the needs of the ill one. It is well for the general public to understand what is going on in medicine and to give the doctor all cooperation.

MEDIAN LINE

The median line is an imaginary anatomical line, or rather a plane, running through the center of the head down through the body, from front backward. This imaginary division of the body is convenient for purposes of description of various parts or organs, in relation to one another and to the center of the body.

Anything facing or near this line is described as "mesial" or inner, and whatever is facing in the opposite direc-tion or away from this line it is called "lateral" or outer.
